Mission and objectives:
- UNAMA was established in 2002 as a Political/ Peacebuilding Mission, exceptionally) directed and supported by the UN Department of
- Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).
- This mandate tasks UNAMA with the promotion and support of humanitarian assistance in line with humanitarian principles, human rights, equality for women and girls, inclusive governance, resilience, and economic stability, and with the use of our good offices for principled and constructive engagement with all national, regional, and global stakeholders in the pursuit of Afghanistan’s peace and stability.
- UNAMA reaffirms its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity of Afghanistan; as well as its continued support for the people of Afghanistan, within the framework of the UN Charter and other international laws and instruments.
- UNAMA's vision is for a stable and prosperous Afghanistan that lives at peace with itself and its neighbours, where the rights of all the people of Afghanistan are upheld, without discrimination.
- On 15 June 2026, UNAMA’s mandate was extended for another year by UN Security Council Resolution 2727 (2026).
- Under the overall guidance of the Direct Supervisor and Chief Engineering Section, the Water and sanitation Engineer will perform the following duties:
- • Perform all tasks related to water supply and sewerage works installations;
- • Operation and maintenance of all water production, water treatment and distribution facilities including pumping and water purification equipment;
- • Operation and Maintenance of wastewater treatment plants
- • Monitoring on an ongoing basis the quality of water produced chemical and bacteriological analysis;
- • Ensuring the adequacy of water in the storage tanks and other storage media;
- • Preparation of technical drawings relating to water supply, drainage sewerage systems;
- • Producing water consumption and water quality reports;
- • Provide lists of spare parts for water supply and sewerage works and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment;
- • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, including contractors/vendors/suppliers, the incumbent is strongly encouraged to set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training.
- Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.
Assignment requirements
- English, Level: Fluent, Required
Required education level:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Water and Sanitary Engineering or Related Technical Qualification with specialization in water treatment;

Skills and experience:
- • A minimum of three years’ experience in water supply and sewerage works; water and sewage treatment plants, pump installation;
- • Computer skills – AutoCAD 3D / AutoCAD; MS Office;
- • Full working knowledge of English, including excellent writing skills;
- • Demonstrated capacity to work independently as well as contribute positively in a team environment;
