Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Engineering Unit of the Service Delivery Section of the Mission Support Division of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC). The incumbent of the position is responsible for applying the basic theories and techniques of electrical and/or civil engineering in the design, maintenance, repair and liquidation of structures, facilities and systems required for peacekeeping missions. The position reports to the Chief of the Engineering Unit.
Within delegated authority, the Associate Electrical/Civil Engineer will be responsible for performing the following duties:
- Applies formulas to complete calculations for projects or phases of broader assignments related to civil engineering requirements of construction, facilities management other related structures and activities in the field. Prepares graphs, curves, and tables; produce Auto CAD drawings; supports managing and coordinating engineering designs.
- Records factual data in tests and observation studies, assists in planning of projects and developing an integrated design ensuring that site work is carried out efficiently utilizing Engineering Software and applications.
- Drafting of detail designs.
- Draft reports, briefs, and memorandums that present results of data and situational analysis.
- Evaluate proposals from bidders for solicitation processes and searches technical reports to obtain information related to projects in process.
- Assists in surveying work to determine site selection for engineering construction projects and assist in preparing regular reports.
- Asset management and associated UMOJA processes. Budget management and requisition planning. Project planning and management of engineering projects.
- Prepares requisitions for procurement of engineering supplies, maintains liaison with contractors and other stakeholders concerning the implementation of projects; produces Terms of References Technical Specifications, Cost Estimations, Design Calculations, etc.
- Ensures that all UNVMC policies are applied and followed thoroughly across all processes, including adherence to UNVMC code of conduct and ethics, and integrates a gender-sensitive approach in all functions.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Chief of Engineering Unit.

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in electrical engineering, civil engineering or a related field. A first level university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job - Specific Qualification
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical/civil engineering is required. Experience in computer design software, particularly “AutoCAD” is desirable. Experience in facilities management for a large office building is desirable. Experience in asset management and associated UMOJA roles is desirable. Experience in computer scheduling software, particularly MS Project is desirable. Computer ability in using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.) is required.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, EnglishandSpanish are required.
