## AIR OPERATIONS ASSISTANT, Abyei, South Sudan - Organization:UNISFA - United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei Organizational Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Aviation Unit of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), duty station Abyei. The Air Operations Assistant reports to the Chief Air Terminal Unit or designated supervisor. The incumbent supports the coordination, monitoring, safety, and emergency response aspects of UN aviation operations, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft, passengers, cargo, and aviation support services in accordance with United Nations aviation standards and procedures. Within delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant will perform the following duties: - Assists in coordinating routine passenger, cargo, logistics resupply, special, VIP, military operational, casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) flights. - Assists in flight following and coordinating integrated search and rescue operations involving UN air assets. - Assists in coordinating diplomatic overflight and landing clearances, ground handling services, and support arrangements for aircrews, including accommodation, transportation, and meals. - Assists in planning and coordinating aircraft parking locations and apron utilization. - Assists in monitoring aircraft refuelling and fuel uploads in accordance with aviation safety procedures. - Operates Airport Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) when required and authorized. - Reviews aircraft weight and balance records, load plans, cargo manifests, and related operational documentation, and initiates required follow-up actions. - Assists in verifying passenger and cargo manifests and ensuring compliance with established procedures. - Assists in ensuring aircraft are properly marshalled, parked, secured, and prepared for ground operations. - Assists in monitoring passengers embarking and disembarking in coordination with Movement Control personnel, aircrew, and airport authorities. - Assists in monitoring and controlling ramp access and ensuring compliance with airside safety and security requirements. - Provides aviation safety oversight during aircraft ground operations, including aircraft parking, refuelling, loading, unloading, and passenger handling activities. - Conducts routine inspections of ramps, aprons, helipads, fuel facilities, aircraft operating areas, and aviation support facilities to identify and mitigate operational and fire safety hazards. - Monitors compliance with aviation safety, fire prevention, and emergency response procedures during air operations. - Ensures firefighting equipment, fire extinguishers, spill response kits, emergency communication systems, and related safety equipment remain serviceable and readily available. - Participates in aircraft emergency responses, including aircraft incidents and accidents, fuel spills, fires, medical emergencies, and evacuation operations. - Assists in coordinating emergency response activities with airport authorities, fire and rescue services, medical teams, security personnel, and other stakeholders. - Maintains operational records, flight movement logs, safety inspection reports, emergency preparedness records, and related aviation documentation. - Participates in emergency drills, aviation safety exercises, and operational readiness activities. - Performs any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. Job - Specific Qualification Technical or vocational training in Air Operations, Airport Operations, Aviation Management, Aviation Safety, Flight Dispatch, Fire Safety, Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Emergency Management, or a related field is desirable. Training or certification in Firefighting, Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), is desirable. A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in air operations, airport operations, aviation support services, ground handling, aviation safety, movement control, or a related field is required. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. The table below shows the minimum required level for each skill in these languages, according to the UN Language Framework (please consult https://languages.un.org for details). Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview. - This position is temporarily available for 364 days. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. - While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. - Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station. - This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15. - Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation. - Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as "retirement." Such retirees shall not be employed by the Organization, unless (a) the operational requirements of the Organization cannot be met by staff members who are qualified and available to perform the required functions; and (b) the proposed employment would not adversely affect the career development or redeployment opportunities of other staff members and represents both a cost-effective and operationally sound solution to meet the needs of the service.
