The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to support decision makers in government and engage with industry and the finance sector to use strong scientific evidence to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production including circular economy, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making industry and environment policies mutually supportive. The Division promotes the development and adoption of policies, technologies, economic instruments, investment decisions, business practices and other efforts which enables to address the environmental challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, and pollution while advancing economic and social objectives. See http://www.unep.org This position is located at the Paris duty station in UNEP's Industry and Economy Division under the Materials and Systems Innovation Unit. The Materials and Systems Innovation Unit leads the formulation and implementation of UNEP’s work programme with the aim of bringing together data, science, and knowledge networks in the area of sustainable materials management, circular economy and life cycle thinking to support governments and engage industry and finance actors to develop relevant policy and practices. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Industry Innovation Branch, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:
- Supports the preparation and review of scientific studies, assessments and knowledge products of the International Resource Panel on sustainable use and management of natural resources and materials and their environmental impacts.
- Provides methodological advice on life cycle approaches, including informing material footprint and circularity metrics to engage different industrial sector and finance stakeholders.
- Ensures that relevant research and analysis undertaken within and outside the unit integrate consideration of competing priorities across all stakeholders along the entire life cycle to enable wider policy relevance in practical contexts.
- Strengthens the science–policy interface on resource and material production and consumption in global, regional and national policy processes.
- Leverages opportunities to inform the policy and business discourse on sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, sustainable management of resources and materials through UNEP knowledge networks and global and regional partnerships on sustainable consumption and production, and circular economy.
- Provides Secretariat support to science bodies, networks and partnerships, to enable a stronger science policy interface in dealing with sustainable management of resources and materials, sustainable consumption and production and circular economy. This includes oversight of secretariat support to the International Resource Panel, the 10Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production patterns, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership, the Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency and the Life Cycle Initiative.
- Increases usability and access of users to scientific data, analytics and knowledge products related to sustainable materials management, circular economy and life cycle approaches.
- Strengthens the knowledge management capacities of the Unit and Branch on circular economy and sustainable consumption and production and engages in UNEP and UN-wide efforts.
- Ensures implementation of gender mainstreaming guidelines by assessing implications for women and men of any planned actions in the context of the initiatives supported by the Unit.
- Oversee implementation and coordination of activities related to budget and funding, including programme/project preparation, submissions, progress reports and financial documentation.
- Ensures effective utilization, supervision and development of staff; guides, evaluates and mentors staff and strategically leverages partnerships.
- Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need.
