Job Description

## Drug Control and Crime Prevention Intern, Nairobi, Kenya - Organization:UNODC - Office on Drugs and Crime Duties and Responsibilities This position is located in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme based in Nairobi, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) The internship is for six (6) months. The Gulf of Aden and Red Sea (GARS) team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme is based in the Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi. The programme has extensive experience and knowledge in supporting states in the region in the fight against maritime crime and has a programming presence in the following countries in the East African Region: Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Uganda. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours). The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Global Maritime Crime Programme. For information on the work of UNODC and ROEA kindly visit www.unodc.org. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship in-person. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: - Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches; - Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences; - Attend and take notes at meetings; - Assist to translate documents and material from Somali to English and vice versa; - Maintain and regularly update a regional Excel tracker covering programme grants, expenditure, implementation timelines, balances, reporting deadlines and required follow-up actions; - Maintain a consolidated procurement tracker covering all ongoing and planned procurement processes; - Perform other tasks as necessary; Qualifications/special skills To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)(OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION) The intern should also: - Be computer literate in standard software applications; - Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Knowledge of Somali language is desirable. Additional Information Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
