Job Description
## Junior Statistician
### About Bodhi
Bodhi Global Analysis is a woman-led international development research consultancy established in London in 2017, with subsidiaries in Nairobi (2018), Singapore (2023), Dar es Salaam (2025), and The Hague (2026). We specialise in formative and evaluative research through participatory approaches, serving UN agencies, bilateral donors, INGOs, and foundations across fragile and conflict-affected contexts. Our services span political economy and conflict analyses, gender and inclusion analyses, baseline through endline evaluations, and capacity building. This position may be held in the United Kingdom, through Bodhi Global Analysis Ltd, or in Singapore, through Bodhi Global Analysis Asia Pte Ltd.
### About the Role
We are recruiting a Junior Statistician to strengthen the quantitative capacity of our research and evaluation teams. The position is open to candidates based in the United Kingdom or Singapore and is offered on a one-year fixed-term contract, with the option to extend based on performance and organisational need. The role is primarily remote, with periodic in-person collaboration.
The Junior Statistician will work across Bodhi's evaluation portfolio, supporting baseline, midline, endline, and final evaluations for UN agencies, bilateral donors, and international NGOs in contexts including Nigeria, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Working under the supervision of senior team members, with designated senior review of all methodological outputs, the post-holder will design and programme survey instruments, support sampling design, clean and validate datasets, conduct statistical analysis, and interpret and present findings for evaluation reports.
Statistical literacy sits at the heart of this role. Beyond running code, the successful candidate must be able to select appropriate statistical methods for a given evaluation question, justify those choices, and interpret results correctly, including their limitations. Shortlisted candidates will complete alive technical assessment, conducted with their screen shared, covering data cleaning, merging, and analysis in Python, followed by an oral component in which candidates explain their methodological choices and interpret their results aloud. The use of AI tools is strictly prohibited during this assessment.Candidates who would not be confident completing such a task independently, without AI assistance, should not apply.
This position suits an early-career statistician who combines rigorous statistical training with a genuine interest in international development research, and who wants to develop within a structured environment offering mentorship from senior evaluation specialists. The role involves international fieldwork deployments supporting enumerator training, survey piloting, and data quality assurance, typically comprising 15 to 20 per cent of working time.
### Key Responsibilities
**Survey Design and Digital Data Collection**
1. Design, programme, and test quantitative survey instruments in Kobo Collect (KoboToolbox), including XLSForm development, skip logic, constraint validation, and multi-language support
2. Support the development of sampling frameworks under senior review, including sample size calculations using standard formulae (Cochran's formula, adjusted for design effects), sample allocation, and stratification plans
3. Support the implementation of multi-stage probability sampling designs, including cluster construction, Probability-Proportionate-to-Size (PPS) selection of enumeration areas, systematic random household selection (including random walk methods), respondent selection using KISH grids, and the construction of post-stratification weights
4. Support the piloting and refinement of survey instruments, identifying translation issues, skip logic errors, and question sequencing problems before full-scale data collection begins
**Data Cleaning and Management**
1. Build and maintain data processing pipelines using Python (pandas, NumPy), including data ingestion, cleaning, validation, transformation, and export
2. Produce documented cleaning logs, codebooks, and analysis-ready datasets that enable transparent and reproducible research workflows
3. Conduct systematic data quality checks during field collection, including daily review of incoming submissions, flagging of inconsistencies and outliers, and back-check analysis
**Statistical Analysis and Interpretation**
1. Conduct quantitative analysis including descriptive statistics, cross-tabulations with disaggregation by sex, age, disability, and location, hypothesis testing, and regression modelling to measure baseline, midline, and endline indicator values
2. Select, justify, and correctly apply statistical methods appropriate to each evaluation design, including significance testing, confidence intervals, and the treatment of survey weights and design effects
3. Interpret and communicate statistical results accurately for non-technical audiences, including the limitations and uncertainty attached to findings
4. Create data visualisations, charts, and summary tables for evaluation reports, presentations, and policy briefs
**Fieldwork Support**
1. Travel to project locations, typically for one to three weeks per deployment, to support enumerator training on digital data collection tools, survey piloting, and real-time data quality monitoring
2. Contribute to daily field debriefs by presenting emerging data patterns and flagging quality concerns to the evaluation team
**Reporting and Knowledge Sharing**
1. Draft quantitative sections of evaluation reports, including methodology descriptions, results tables, and statistical annexes, ensuring findings are presented clearly for non-technical audiences
2. Prepare data summaries and visualisations for stakeholder presentations and validation workshops
3. Contribute to Bodhi's internal analytical standards by documenting procedures and maintaining shared code libraries
### Qualifications and Experience
**Essential**
1. A Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, econometrics, economics, data science, epidemiology, or a quantitative social science with substantial statistical content
2. A minimum of one year of professional experience in quantitative data analysis; relevant internships, research assistantships, and consultancy placements will be considered
3. Demonstrated statistical literacy: a sound grasp of probability, inference, hypothesis testing, regression, and sampling theory, and the ability to choose and defend the right method for a given question. This will be tested through alive, screen-shared technical assessment, including an oral reasoning component, in which AI tools are not permitted
4. A sound understanding of survey sampling methodology, covering the main forms of probability sampling (simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster, and multi-stage designs), sample size estimation, and the construction and application of survey weights
5. Proficiency in Python for data analysis, including working fluency with pandas, NumPy, and at least one visualisation library (matplotlib, seaborn, or Plotly)
6. Working proficiency in at least one of SPSS, Stata, or R
7. Hands-on experience designing and programming surveys in Kobo Collect (KoboToolbox), including form logic and validation rules
8. Professional exposure to the international development, humanitarian, or social research sector
9. Fluent English (written and spoken), with the ability to produce clear, well-structured analytical writing for non-technical audiences
10. Willingness to travel internationally for fieldwork deployments comprising 15 to 20 per cent of working time, including to fragile and conflict-affected contexts, and to complete security training (HEAT or equivalent) as required
11. The existing right to work in the United Kingdom or in Singapore; we are unable to sponsor visas o
